iOS 10 launched in September 2016 while I was Head of Product Design at Coffee Meets Bagel. We wanted to offer our users a fun way to engage with each other and their friends. Several approaches were explored but we found that when using iMessage, stickers are best used to express or exaggerate an emotion. Emotional Bagels were born!
My Role
I was responsible for the
concept,
design,
illustration,
animation,
final specasset production,
and art direction.
I used Illustrator to draw the stickers, After Effects to animate them, and XCode for final production.
Goals
To utilise new features in iOS 10
To add a delightful experience for our users
To proliferate the use of the app through sent stickers
To add to a list a new features for a big iOS 10 upgrade
Research and Inspiration
For projects with heavy visual design I usually start by doing an image search and collect designs that resonate most with me in a moodboard. I wanted the stickers to be on brand but also endearing, engaging and expressive. Click on the images to see the source and artist information.
Early Sketches
Next I started sketching ideas - going from pencil and paper to Illustrator.
Final Stickers
Using testing results were positive and the stakeholders were pleased. The final Sticker pack was released in for the iOS 10 release and remains a top features of the Coffee Meets Bagel app today.
